I needed a new phone since I moved and Verizon is the only carrier with coverage at my new place. My trusty Oneplus 6 doesn’t have the radios to connect to Verizon’s Network so in addition to a new carrier I needed the new phone. I could have gone with another Android but I loved the integrated phone setup on my Mom’s Crosstrek so much I ended up jumping ship to get that experience for the Car Play only Corolla. One Space Gray iPhone XS for the squirrel.
Hardware is very nice in the hand, though as someone who has only ever had Android phones (last iOS device was a 5th generation iPod Touch running iOS 8) I’m quite disoriented right now. The screen is super nice. I actually went in to the store looking at an XR and couldn’t go back to an LCD after having AMOLED phones for years. So I groaned internally and sprung for the XS.
Apple is a bunch of cheap bastards though. My music library doesn’t fit on a 64gb device and they don’t make a 128gb XS so I had to jump all the way to a 256gb. Then I got home and discovered they don’t even give you the headphone dongle.
That said the haptics are amazing. FaceID is cool but it weirds me out that there is no action to unlock the phone. I just pick it up and it’s unlocked.
TL;DR: I needed a new phone, loved using Android Auto in my Mom’s Crosstrek, car on order only has Car Play, spent way too much to move over to iOS.
Anyone know how I turn off the sounds this phone makes when you use the media controls in the notification and in the control center?

I just realized my phone is officially worth more than my car.

“checkmate”

I think the 2 year financing through Verizon is the bigger checkmate. That monthly bill hurts coming from paying $25 a month for Google Fi.

Crosstrek quiz:
Are you feeling a sudden urge to eat fried brussels sprouts?
Have you recently gotten a dog?
Does your life seem to revolve around your “active lifestyle”, for example: organic shopping, book club meetings, and school runs?
If you’ve answered yes to any of these and are the owner of an iPhone, you may have contracted Crosstrekia. For those over 40, Crosstrekia may be uncurable. Consult your doctor if you suddenly feel like Bernie Sanders “ really resonates, like you know, he gets it man.”

Because Verizon is the only one who has reliable service in Hinesburg VT.

I know nothing of Us phone companies.

You have Verizon and AT&T who have good coverage but are massive pains in the ass. Then you have T-Mobile who doesn’t have as good of coverage but has much better customer service. Then you have Sprint which is just a dumpster fire.

I think I had a phone with at&t when I came down to Palm Springs once

I care enough about using Android over iOS that I won't buy a CarPlay-only car.

My current solution is to only own cars so old that they don't have smartphone connectivity of any kind..

I didn’t care about what the infotainment was when I looked at it at first. I have never even had a color display in a car so I was fine with the Toyota system. Then I tried AA in the Crosstrek and loved the flexibility it gave me.
Honestly, it was really just time to try something different after 8 years on Android. Car Play only in the Corolla was just the last nudge needed to make the switch instead of getting a Pixel or an S10.

You still have that O ne+ 6? Wanna sell it? I coul d move up and pass m y 5t on to the wife, who is suffering death-by-update-slowdown in Samsung Galaxy S7 land...

I need to figure out how to make Google stop making me dig it out to get a code every time I try to log into either my personal or work Google accounts and then I do think I will be passing it along for a reasonable price. It’s only a year old and still has plenty of life left in it.
I’ll let you know once I get google to stop depending on it.

Cool, keep me in mind, I’ d gladly take a drive down to Hinesburg. Actually have friends who live there too.

They all suck. But Verizon has the largest network. They (and Sprint) also used CDMA for their 3G network, which has traditionally made it harder to get handsets (either because CDMA wasn’t supported, or because they wouldn’t activate hardware they didn’t sell.) Today though, most unlocked flagships should be compatible I think. My unlocked S10 activated on Sprint (after some Sprint bullshit). It also used to be a no-brainer to buy a phone from the carrier because they rolled device costs into the service, so you were paying regardless, but today they don’t really do device subsidies, so it makes more sense to shop around.

Last year, I jumped from an LG G5 to an iPhone 8+ 256GB. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made; I’m probably gonna keep this 8+ well past the two-year lease payments. The 256GB is super worth it; I’ve used over 70GB so far. It also sends you down a slope, as I bought an Apple Watch Series 4 44MM Rose Gold in April and I asked for Airpods for my birthday.
I hope you love it!

I made the switch to Apple like 4 years ago. First I got an Ipad, then got an IPhone like 6 months later. I have zero intentions of going back to A ndroid .

I will probably end up going back to Android when I want to spend less than $1k on a phone. For now though I think this XS will serve me well.

70gb is about what my usage is once I get everything loaded onto the phone. I do wish they sold a 128gb configuration for the XS though. I don’t need 256gb of storage.

When I was considering the 7+, 128GB was my sweet spot. Since that phone was my first big, but long-term purchase, I was like “go big or go home.” I got a good deal on my 8+, too.
